€5,400 vs €2,820: What we spent on groceries in 2025

€5,400 vs €2,820: What we spent on groceries in 2025

The typical Belgian couple spends ~€5,400 a year on groceries (or €450 a month). If you're reading this, that's because you want to make your own grocery spending less scary. And it is possible. The key is a good meal plan.

In 2025, as a couple living in Brussels, we spent ~€2,820 for all groceries. Per person, that equals €117.50 a month or €27.15 a week.

When you join Spoonfeed, you get our meal plans covering Monday-Friday. And the working week is where most of the money goes, especially if you're buying lunches. According to our stats, weekdays are about 85% of the grocery spend.

Let's explore 2025 in numbers and enter 2026 meal planning with momentum!

€2,520

saved vs average Belgian couple's groceries

That's the big number. Every week in 2025, we spent €49.50 less than the surveyed average spend from Testachats/Testaankoop.

Our €27.15 a week spend covers everything from breakfast, lunches, dinners, desserts, and snacks. These days, that's about the price of one meal and a drink at a restaurant. (That doesn't mean restaurants are low value, though. You pay for the experience and saved time!)

€1.16

a portion

The average meal we cook costs €4.63. Because we make four portions - two dinners and two leftover lunches - that means each plate of food totals €1.16.

This hammers home the point: great meals don't need to be expensive! Cooking yourself and shopping smart will always be the highest value option.

€59.40

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive months (August and October)

For whatever reason, some weeks and months can be more expensive than others. In the long-term, what's important is the average - and not to be discouraged!

Meal planning pays off over time, as you bulk buy items on offer, rely on frozen emergency meals rather than buying out, and reuse ingredients you've invested in.

3.6%

higher grocery spending than in 2024

Inflation is affecting everyone's shopping. By following offers in our meal plan, we've managed to ride it - our rise in spending tracks rising food prices in Belgium.

66%

of spending was at Colruyt

For most products, following the offers and high-value prices will more than likely take you to Colruyt. But that doesn't get you everywhere. We also spent 23% at Delhaize and 11% elsewhere like street markets and world food stores.

How to minimise your grocery spending

If you already know how much you spend on food shopping, that's a great start! To track your expenses, you can use an app, a spreadsheet, or your bank app. This is key so that you can see how your budget evolves as you take some key steps:

  • Meal plan. Take advantage of offers while reducing waste.
  • Use the economy of scale. Split the bills and beat high unit costs.
  • Make the most of plant-based. Cook lots of delicious and affordable veg!
